Pressure, stress, and lonelinessHead honchos have been calling out the difficulties of their jobs for years. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has bemoaned that running a company is "really not that fun" and "just awful" at times. "The depths of loneliness I experienced as a CEO are difficult to put into words," he posted on X in January. The combination of immense pressure, stress, loneliness, and lack of work-life balance that often comes with being a CEO may well explain why few people last long in the role.

CNN —Airbnb wants more renters, and not just homeowners, to be able to become hosts on its short-term rental platform. New York City, for example, has argued that short-term rental platforms like Airbnb limit available housing supply, leading to overall higher rents, and that they can be disruptive to neighborhoods. “A lot of the early laws that were made limited short-term rental to homeownership,” Theo Yedinsky, the vice president of public policy at Airbnb, told CNN. These renters, however, will still have to get permission from their landlord to host on Airbnb (Airbnb has no involvement in individual lease agreements between property owners and tenants). And many major cities, including New York, are increasingly cracking down and heavily restricting the short-term rental market.

For much of the past year, OpenAI’s board of directors has been criticized as too small and too divided to effectively govern one of the fastest-growing start-ups in Silicon Valley history. On Friday, the board’s dysfunction spilled into public view when four of its members fired Sam Altman, OpenAI’s popular and powerful chief executive. Mr. Altman, 38, returned to the company on Tuesday night, after days of haggling over his job and over the makeup of the board. The board and Mr. Altman’s allies discussed more than a half dozen options for its future. The departing board wanted to be sure the replacements would be independent thinkers and experienced enough to stand up to Mr. Altman.

Marissa Mayer slammed OpenAI's 'broken and underadvised' board on social media. AdvertisementMarissa Mayer has some harsh words for OpenAI's board. "The fact that Ilya now regrets just shows how broken and underadvised they are/were," Mayer wrote on social media. OpenAI's bylaws allow board members to both appoint and remove other board members with a majority vote, Wired reported. In the case of OpenAI, which had only six board members, a majority vote meant only four board members needed to agree on a change to approve it.

Airbnb has made its first acquisition as a public company, in a deal valued at just under $200 million, sources familiar with the deal told CNBC. The startup is called Gameplanner.AI, which has been in "stealth mode" since its founding in 2020. Startups in stealth mode operate out of the public eye for various reasons, such as to protect intellectual property or avoid distractions. Airbnb's news follows reports that Google is in talks to invest hundreds of millions into another AI startup, Character.AI, which in March raised a $150 million at a $1 billion valuation in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. The startup lets people create virtual characters or chat with AI versions of celebrities like Elon Musk or Albert Einstein.

Airbnb said that it will roll out what it calls “Guest Favorites” this week. He said the unpredictability of listings is the biggest reason why someone would choose a hotel room over Airbnb. Airbnb is also encouraging hosts to create photo tours of their property, which Chesky said will use AI to organize photos by room. Earlier this year, Airbnb began discouraging hosts from charging exorbitant cleaning fees, a major complaint of users. The site lets visitors filter searches by all-in pricing, which includes the fees, although it is not the default setting.

Airbnb shares slipped more than 3% in after-hours trading Wednesday after the company reported stronger than expected revenue, buoyed by currency tailwinds, but provided weaker-than-expected guidance for the upcoming fiscal quarter. Plenty of side hustles and businesses become lucrative because they fix an unsolved problem, or improve something that already exists. If that seems easier said than done, there's a simple solution: Study people who've fixed other unsolved problems before, self-made millionaire and RSE Ventures CEO Matt Higgins said at the CNBC Make It: Your Money virtual event last week. Higgins pointed to one particular billionaire as an example: Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, who accidentally co-founded his company while brainstorming ways to pay rent in 2007. Chesky and one of his co-founders booked out air mattresses to strangers who were in San Francisco for a design conference. Pay attention to your surroundings, and ask yourself if your solutions to everyday problems are replicable, Higgins said.
